Columbus Avenue Transportation Planning Project Summary
PROJECT SUMMARY

The San Francisco County Transportation Authority and Renew SF have been awarded a $180,000 Caltrans Community-Based Transportation Planning grant to develop a consensus-based community transportation plan for the historic Columbus Avenue corridor. The Columbus Avenue Revitalization Master Plan will be developed through a collaborative community-based planning process intended to coordinate among the local micro-neighborhoods along Columbus Avenue. The Plan will establish a comprehensive set of recommendations including enhanced transit connections, streetscape improvements, and economic growth initiatives developed with the participation of residents, merchants, local organizations and government agencies. Potential streetscape improvements include enhanced transit, circulation and sidewalks and revitalized tree plantings, parks and plazas.
The Columbus Avenue Revitalization Master Plan effort will be led by Renew SF, a coalition of concerned citizens committed to the planning and implementing of programs for the improvement of the North East sector of the city. Renew SF’s goals embrace the ideas of promoting greater economic vitality, creating livable streets and well civic spaces, and establishing stronger linkages between land use decisions and transportation development.
The San Francisco County Transportation Authority supports the Columbus Avenue Revitalization Master Plan effort through technical assistance and oversight funded by the Prop K Neighborhood Transportation Planning program. The Proposition K (Prop K) halfcent local transportation sales tax program and New Expenditure Plan passed by voters in November 2003 dedicates a category of funding to support neighborhood transportation planning efforts and to leverage state and federal transportation planning funds.
